The planning of green provision for parks, verges, green strips, gardens and other locations is the most important activity for many green space practitioners, but the contribution that can be made by flower bulbs is often overlooked. Which is a pity when you realise how simple bulbs can be!

After the gloom of winter people feel the urge to experience the awakening natural world, and it is flower bulbs in particular that can meet this need. Great swathes of crocuses and narcissi lining the road on the way to work or a giant container filled with hyacinths in the station concourse can galvanise passers-by into action. And what can be lovelier than a winter garden bursting with flowers as spring arrives? Surely a sight to lift anyone's heart?
